5By far the best chess program available  Aug 23, 2009
... and I've tried all the good ones. It also serves as a great training tool contrary to what many people think. Not only does it offer coaching, spying for the next move and many other great training tools but the analysis feature is top notch. I run all my finished games through Fritz and try to learn from my mistakes. The calculation training is something I've only seen in this program. There's also tactics training for blitz players. I do run into some occasional crashes which are annoying, but the content of this games more than makes up for the little bugs. Also it's a fun interface which proves that the guys at Fritz in Germany definitely have a sense of humor. For $50 you will get years of enjoyment as well as a year of free online play.

5Great analysis tool  Jul 09, 2009
I'm very happy with my purchase of Fritz 11. It is a great analysis tool for tournament players. I had a hard time at first figuring out how to load a simple pgn game but this is simply done by clicking on "Edit" -> "Paste" -> "Paste Game". Once I figured out how to do that it was smooth sailing thereafter. It is also good to know that you must put Fritz in "Infinite analysis" for you to analyze your games (vs. having the engine make moves as in a real game).

The other great thing about this program is the ability to enter multiple variations when you are reading through analysis in a chess book. You can enter the main line, but you can also add variations and sub-variations (and so on), which are all remembered by the program, so you can move seamlessly between positions that arise in each variation. (I hope this makes sense).

Finally, you can enter any position you want by going to "File" -> "New" -> "Position setup".

To close, I would say that this is an excellent analysis tool for your openings and middlegames (I ran into a few positions that are draws according to the endgame tablebases but that Fritz evaluated as winning for one side). And it is also an excellent tool to be used when studying a chess book that lists a main line with multiple sub-variations. It is also good for practice games using virtually any time control that you want, but that's only if you can bear to play against an engine with a stratospheric rating.

If you are looking for a great chess analysis tool/companion, this is it!

5this is the way to learn  Apr 14, 2009
If you really want to learn chess beyond the basics, you need an engine that will tell you when you're making errors, what you risk in those errors, and what a better line of play would be for your method of choice. Fritz does this. I also want to make a brief warning against the review by jarlaxle, as he recommends Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. Take a look at the reviews if you want more evidence, but this book was not written by Bobby Fischer, and it is so incredibly basic that it is essentially worthless. You can learn as much reading the wikipedia entry on chess. Silman's Complete Endgame Course is available on Amazon and very good, and Winning Chess Openings by Robertie is one I like as well that is a good introduction to the more popular openings for both White and Black.

3Fritz 11 is good but...  Mar 19, 2009
The product itself is good. If you are looking for a chess engine, this is it. However, I bought the product to become better at chess. I was hoping for more tools in the way of training.

The training tool it has isn't very good. Once you go over a couple hours of informative chess videos it is done. It does offer a little trainer guy during play against fritz but it wasn't that helpful. Honestly, I got better training with a couple of chess books (303 tricky checkmates, Bobby Fischer teaches chess are both excellent) then I did spending time playing Fritz.

My recommendation is to buy some chess books, do some free research online, and play online on sites for free like [...]

5Best ever  Jan 22, 2009
Best PC Chess so far. Way better than ChessMaster Grand Master Edition. The graphics are far superior with Fritz 11. Better board selection too...and I especially like that you don't have to put the DVD in every time to play. Nice job Fritz!!!
