The Kings are handcrafted from Golden Rosewood or Boxwood, and measure 1.75 inches tall. Each wooden piece contains a magnet strong enough to be stable on bumpy roads and turbulent flights. When folded, it is a compact 10" x 5" x 1.5" and easily slips into a briefcase or knapsack.
The well made latch and hinge mechanism is snug and tight for a long life, while the interior green foam lining holds each piece individually and cushions them securely.

This travel set is different from other sets that I've used in the past. This set is noticeably higher quality, with well crafted pieces made from beautiful, shiny wood. The set is a perfect size, and it has a foam insert to hold the pieces during storage. There is felt on the bottom of the pieces. I want to buy more so I have one in the car, one in the house... some for gifts... Very pleased with this purchase. I just wish the Knight's eyes weren't placed quite so high, but even still, it is a very nice looking Knight.
In short, it has everything I was looking for in a Chess set. :)

Tired of junky sets? Here's a quality set! Nov 11, 2008
Most travel chess sets are simply cheap junk; I've owned quite a few which would be overpriced if sold at a Dollar Store. If you're sick of those "garbage" sets, it's time to step up to this quality travel set from ChessCentral. The pieces are made from well-produced wood, not plastic. And they're even magnetic! That was the big surprise about this set: it's not only a nice wood travel set (which is unusual in and of itself) but the pieces are magnetic with the metal hidden by the chessboard. It's portable, durable, and the magnets hold the pieces well in place. The set's worth every penny -- highly recommended.

Pricey? Not at all! Sep 30, 2008
At this price, you get more than you'd think. I have very young nephews who can't seem to keep the pieces on normal boards, so when I found this magnetic wood board, I had to try it. It surpassed my expectations. I read a review that it was too pricey. Not at all, for what you get. I recommend it to anyone.

Great travel chess set! The magnets held the pieces nicely even on a bumpy road trip. The set is very pretty and I like the color of the wood. I am very pleased with my purchase!

My DH had a similar travel chess board that our eight year old son took to school on a rainy day and unfortunately it came back broken. My DH was terribly upset as he has had the set since his 8th grade graduation (He's now 56). Anyway son felt bad and he wanted to get a new one for the daddy's Christmas gift. It did not arrive until the 30th even though we ordered it at the beginning of December. However, it was well worth the wait. The board is beautiful and well crafted. The pieces come inside a foam insert and are equally well crafted. We are very happy (as is the daddy) with our purchase.
